A first.

Annabelle walked up to me this afternoon and handed me a piece of paper:

Annabelle :: Here Mom, have this.

What I saw made me gasp! I don't even think she knows the names of all the letters, but she certainly knows that what she wrote is her name.

I have never shown her how to write her name. She has come to recognize it certain places (particularly on special packages from Grama that come in the mail!) but otherwise she has never been prompted to write letters.

I'm starting to understand that some children really do teach themselves to read and write. I had always kind of thought that was a small myth, that the parents are actively teaching them at home. But I see now, sometimes it just happens.
